What is a RM file?
A multimedia file saved in the Real Media multimedia container format is called RM. It was developed by Real Networks. Every RM file has several different ways of storing information. The first one is storing only audio in the RealAudio format. The second option is storing the video in the RealVideo format. The last one is storing both RealAudio and RealVideo. This type of file format uses streaming content at a constant rate. It means that the bitrate remains the same throughout streaming. Creators of RM file format replaced it with the RMVB extension, which enables media to be streamed in a variable bit rate and allows data transfer at different speeds.
What is a AU file?
This type of file represents a simple audio file that was primarily common on NeXT systems and early Web pages. The AU file format was, at first, used by Sun or some similar Unix-based machine, but now, it can be opened with other audio programs as well. To reproduce this file format, you can use Nullsoft Winamp, Apple QuickTime Player, Microsoft Windows Media Player, RealNetworks, RealPlayer Cloud, or Adobe Audition CC. Although AU files are quite small and have poor sound quality, they store information in three sections. The first one is called header, with a maximum of 24 bytes. Next, there’s a variable-length annotation block. And last but not least, there’s the audio data itself.
