What is a MXF file?

Material Exchange Format is a container format for professional digital video and audio media. It is known as the MXF file extension, and it’s defined by a set of SMPTE standards. It can be used in video recorders, cameras and on computers. Besides audio and video data, MXF files contain information about media stored inside the file. This type of file format was designed to streamline workflows between different platforms like cameras, digital editing equipment, and servers. Various programs support MXF files, such as File Viewer Plus, Adobe Premiere Pro 2020, Avid Media Composer, MAGIX VEGAS Pro 17, Grass Valley EDIUS, Avid Pro Tools, OpenCube XFReader, Apple QuickTime Player, etc.

What is a AU file?

This type of file represents a simple audio file that was primarily common on NeXT systems and early Web pages. The AU file format was, at first, used by Sun or some similar Unix-based machine, but now, it can be opened with other audio programs as well. To reproduce this file format, you can use Nullsoft Winamp, Apple QuickTime Player, Microsoft Windows Media Player, RealNetworks, RealPlayer Cloud, or Adobe Audition CC. Although AU files are quite small and have poor sound quality, they store information in three sections. The first one is called header, with a maximum of 24 bytes. Next, there’s a variable-length annotation block. And last but not least, there’s the audio data itself.
